In 1921, Max Braun started a small company that would eventually deliver Braun Electric Shavers to the world.
Starting in Frankfurt, Germany the company was originally engaged in the business of making radio components.
But, Max always had an inventive streak in him. When he heard about Jacob Schick’s electric razor invention, he turned to his own answer to that emerging technology, the S 50.
It was a prototype that he had been working on since the early days of the company. He had designed his own type of electric shavers for men and in 1950 he finally unveiled his design to the world.
Braun’s invention worked on a totally different principle than Schick’s. Its cutting blades sat beneath a thin sheet of foil and moved back and forth laterally. This design promised a much closer shave than was previously thought possible with electric razors, and his design principle became a popular and much-copied one.
By 1967, the Gillette Company of Boston, Massachusetts, a company that had always admired the futuristic design principles embodied in Braun’s line of products, purchased a controlling share of the German company.
With this sudden infusion of capital, Braun was able to invest heavily in the research and design of new and better products.
By the early 90’s, Braun had refocused their brand on the personal grooming and household appliance sector. They became a household name as well as a world market leader in the foil shaver market.
